Incubator - Bernard Goss Memorial Fund
Bernard Goss – Chung Ying Theatre Company’s third Artistic Director who took on the reins in 1984 – proactively trained Hong Kong theatre talent via workshops and relaying acting skills to untrained Chinese actors with aims to nurture an all-Chinese cast. Meanwhile, he also assisted all Company members to realise their full potential. Team spirit and harmony are priorities for Bernard Goss, who, through discovering the actors’ distinguished edges, crafted a unique artistic style for Chung Ying that became the backbone of countless, groundbreaking performances. As a director, his I Am Hong Kong illustrated the city’s history and future through the eyes of a foreigner – a genuinely innovative script of the time. Under his leadership, Chung Ying took flight. Bernard Goss’ avant-garde and global vision bridged the theatre landscapes of Hong Kong and overseas with once-triannual international shows as well as forums that welcomed open dialogue from theatre practitioners worldwide. Thanks to Bernard Goss’ myriad initiatives, Chung Ying developed into a professional company brimming with Hong Kong flavours with international vision. To date, Chung Ying has continued its efforts to promote and develop homegrown theatre. The Fund hopes to further the undue efforts to nurture the talents of Hong Kong theatre.
Theatre Education – Ko Tin Lung Memorial Fund
As the first Chinese Artistic Director of Chung Ying Theatre Company, Ko Tin Lung put a heavy emphasis on the development of original scripts in the local theatre scene during his 26-year-long tenure. In the first season under his leadership, the stage performances were all local productions, followed by programmes such as “Play Ground”, “Borrett Laboratory”, “Chung Ying Studio Shorts” and more – all designed to encourage local scriptwriters and creativity amongst Chung Ying members. Ko Tin Lung played a vital role in promoting the localising development of scriptwriting in Hong Kong. As a pioneer in local theatre education, Ko Tin Lung promoted the ethos of “Drama For All” and demonstrated his care for the humanities and the Hong Kong people. He brought Chung Ying into the community via neighbourhood theatre and arts-sharing projects to welcome people from all walks of life into the craft's embrace through education and art cultivation. The mark Ko Tin Lung has made on Hong Kong’s theatre scene has shaped the development of local theatre today. The Fund will continue this late Artistic Director's respected ethos of spreading theatre to every corner of the city and grooming young talent to inject new energy into the industry.
Development – Rupert Chan Memorial Fund
Rupert Chan, an English Literature and Comparative Literature graduate at the University of Hong Kong, pioneered theatrical adaptations and translated works in Hong Kong. He crossed paths with Chung Ying Theatre Company in 1984 with the translation of the children’s programme Insect World, which became his impetus to countless play adaptations including Twelfth Night, Spring Fever Hotel, Hobson’s Choice and more. Rupert Chan was particularly well-versed in adding Chinese contexts of time and background into foreign masterpieces during the translation and adaptation works. Rupert Chan was also a veteran administrator. He joined the Board of Directors at Chung Ying in 1997 and strategically steered the Company onto the right artistic path. He was also a mainstay during the tumultuous times of art scene. Rupert Chan’s profound cultural knowledge and boundless vision became an indispensable beacon for the growth of Chung Ying. The Fund hopes to continue his spirit and passion with the following projects, which not only nurture talents in script translation and adaptation but also enrich theatre heritage and broaden artists’ horizons.
